Settings Reference
Every panel in memrynote Settings, in one searchable page. Open with Cmd+, or the Settings gear at the foot of the rail.
Settings opens inside the window, not over it: the workspace shows the selected page, and the sidebar panel swaps its vault tree for the settings list. Leave with the back arrow beside the Settings title, Esc, the gear again, or any page on the rail. Your tabs, open notes, and sidebar tree are exactly as you left them. If the sidebar was collapsed, it opens for the visit and collapses again on the way out.
The settings sidebar lists Account on its own, then three groups:
- Workspace — General, Appearance, Editor (with Templates below it), Shortcuts
- Features — Modules (on/off toggles; Journal, Tasks, Inbox and Calendar open as sub-pages with a back link, and Esc steps back), AI & Agents (Models, Agents, and Connect tabs, including Command Line)
- Data — Tags & Properties, Vault & Data, Import
Searching settings
The search field at the top of the sidebar finds a setting by name, section, or description. While a query is typed the sidebar shows the matches, each with its location (for example General › Language & region). The first match opens immediately, scrolls into view, and is highlighted in the accent color.
- ↑ / ↓ move to another match and highlight it
- Enter focuses the highlighted setting's control
- Esc clears the search; a second Esc leaves Settings
Matching ignores case and punctuation, so up-date finds Updates.
Account
Identity
The signed-in email and current subscription plan. Read-only — sign in or out from the security group below.
Sync
A toggle to enable or pause cloud sync, plus a status indicator and the time of the last successful sync.
On the free plan sync stays local-only, so the status shows Local only and this group swaps the toggle for an upgrade card with an Unlock Sync button that opens the plan picker in your browser.
Billing
Shows the current sync plan, activation state, storage limit, max file size, synced vault limit, and version-history window. Upgrade (labelled Unlock Sync on the free plan) opens the plan picker at memrynote.com/account/sync in your browser — no separate web login needed — where you choose a plan (Plus, Pro, or Believer) and billing frequency (monthly or yearly) before continuing to Paddle checkout. Refresh status asks the sync server to reconcile the latest Paddle transaction, and Manage billing opens Paddle's hosted customer portal when the account has a Paddle customer id.
On an active monthly plan, Billing also offers Switch to yearly. The first click prices the switch and shows the exact amount due today; the second confirms it. You do not cancel first and you are not charged twice — Memry moves your existing subscription onto the yearly price and Paddle credits the unused part of the current month against it. Plan changes that cost less (yearly back to monthly, or Pro down to Plus) take effect at your next renewal instead of refunding today. Believer is a one-time purchase, so it is not part of the switch flow.
If checkout succeeds before the webhook finishes, Billing shows Activation pending. Use Refresh status after a moment, or contact the billing support email shown in the panel for refunds, chargebacks, or manual help.
Storage
A breakdown of vault size by category — notes, attachments, CRDT data, and other. The refresh button recomputes totals on demand. Visible only when signed in.
Devices
A list of devices that have been linked to your account. Rename or revoke from the device row menu.
Security
- Recovery Key — re-display the recovery phrase after passphrase confirmation
- Rotate Keys — re-encrypt the vault key with a new master key and reseal it for each linked device
- Sign Out — clears the session (with a confirmation dialog)
The Account page footer links to the memrynote GitHub repository and issue tracker for starring the project or sending product feedback.
General
Startup
Launch at Login auto-starts memrynote when you log in.
Updates
Shows the installed version. If a newer version is available, a button lets you check, download, and install.
An update never takes the window. It announces itself as one quiet row at the foot of the sidebar panel, beside the Settings gear on the rail, and nothing else happens until you act on it.
With Automatically download & install updates on, which is the default, you never see the download at all. The first thing you meet is Update ready, meaning the new version is already on disk and only needs a restart. Turn the setting off and an earlier Update available row appears instead, with a Download action, and a thin progress line along the bottom edge of the row while it fetches. memrynote only shows progress for a download you started; one it started on your own behalf stays silent.
Hover the row for a moment, or click it, and a small panel opens with the version, up to three highlights from the release, and two ways out:
- Restart now — quit and install immediately. Your tabs, scroll position, and cursor come back where they were.
- On next quit — close the panel and carry on. The update installs the next time you quit on your own. memrynote does not ask again, and there is no toast or reminder.
- All changes — opens the full release notes on GitHub in your browser.
After the restart, the new version's release notes open as one extra read-only tab in the background. Nothing you had open is replaced or taken over — close the tab and you are exactly where you left off. It is never saved to your vault or synced, so it does not come back after the next restart.
A ⋯ menu in the same panel holds the rarer choices: skip this version, turn off automatic updates, or copy your version details for a bug report.
If an install fails, the row turns red and a dialog explains what happened. Your vault is never involved — an update replaces the app, not your notes — so a failed install leaves you on your current version with everything intact. The dialog shows the installer's own error and offers a manual download.
You can also run a check from the menu bar without opening Settings: memrynote → Check for Updates… on macOS, Help → Check for Updates… on Windows and Linux. The result is reported as a toast. In a development build the toast says updates are packaged-release only.
Language & Region
- Language — UI locale dropdown, 32 languages
- Clock Format — 12-hour or 24-hour
- Date Format — how calendar dates display throughout the app (
MM/DD/YYYY,DD/MM/YYYY,YYYY-MM-DD, orDD.MM.YYYY). This preference is per device and isn't synced.
On a brand-new install the app picks its starting language from your operating system, mapping regional variants onto the closest supported locale (de-AT → German, pt-BR → Portuguese, zh-Hans → Simplified Chinese) and falling back to English for anything unsupported. The detected language is saved straight away, so it is a one-time guess you can override in this dropdown. An existing install is never re-detected — if you already have a vault, your current language stays put across updates.
Changing the language takes effect immediately, including the native application menu. A language change made on another device applies as soon as it syncs, without a restart.
Dates, times, weekday and month names follow the selected language rather than the operating system, so a Japanese interface shows Japanese weekdays even on an English system. Arabic and Hebrew switch the interface to right-to-left.
The desktop app loads the active language bundle at startup and fetches another locale when the language setting changes. English fallback messages remain available for errors before the selected locale has finished loading.
Tab Behavior
- Open Pages in a New Tab — off by default. Opening a page reuses the current tab instead of adding one, so browsing (or creating) a run of pages leaves a single tab behind; turn it on and every page you open gets its own tab. It was on by default in earlier versions: upgrading moves you to the new default once, unless you had turned the setting on or off yourself, in which case your choice is kept. It covers every sidebar row — notes, folders, projects, canvases, tags, bookmarks, and the top-level sections — plus new-note/new-canvas creation and following wiki links or backlinks inside a note. A pinned tab is never replaced — the page opens beside it — and explicit gestures always open a new tab whatever this is set to: Open in New Tab / Open to the Side from a row's context menu, middle-click (opens in the background), and ⌘/Ctrl-click on a section. Since the same release, Open in New Tab also works on the singleton sections (Home, Inbox, Journal, Calendar, Tasks, Graph): it opens a genuine second copy. The setting syncs across your devices.
- Restore Session — reopen the previous session's tabs on launch
- Tab Close Button — always visible, hover only, or active tab only
Window Behavior
Minimize to Tray is off by default. Turn it on and closing the main window hides it to the system tray instead of closing it; memrynote keeps running and syncing. Click the tray icon to bring the window back, or use Show memrynote in the tray menu. The same menu has Quit, which exits for real.
Platform differences:
- On Windows the window leaves the taskbar while it is hidden. Left-click the tray icon to restore it, right-click for the menu.
- On macOS the icon appears in the menu bar. The app also stays in the Dock, so ⌘-Tab and the Dock icon still reach it. Left-click the menu bar icon to restore the window, right-click for the menu.
- On Linux the icon appears in the system tray if your desktop provides one. Use its menu, since click handling varies between desktops. A session with no system tray leaves the setting without effect and the window closes as usual, so the app can never end up hidden with no way to bring it back.
The setting syncs across your devices.
File Creation
Create in Selected Folder routes new notes into whichever folder is currently selected in the sidebar.
Default Location for New Notes names the folder an unplaced new note goes to — a note created with no folder in mind, such as from a quick capture. Leave it empty to use the vault root.
It only affects where a new note is written. It is not a root:
- The sidebar keeps showing your whole vault. A folder named here appears as an ordinary folder alongside the others; nothing is hidden or re-parented.
- Creating a note inside a folder puts it in that folder, not inside the default one.
- Every folder stays browsable. Folder View, moves, drag-and-drop, and folder paths on the sync wire are all relative to the vault root regardless of this setting.
Wherever the note lands, the sidebar opens that folder and scrolls the new note into view — see Creating a Note.
Privacy
Telemetry opts in or out of anonymous usage analytics. Off by default. Only enum-like event metadata is sent — never note content, search text, tag names, or file paths.
Automatically Send Error Reports controls what happens when an error screen appears. On by default: Memry sends a redacted diagnostic report (technical logs only, never note content) in the background. Turn it off to be asked each time instead — the error screen then shows a Send diagnostic report button that opens the consent dialog first.
Send Feedback
The speech-bubble button at the foot of the rail, above Settings, opens a feedback dialog. The message is required; everything else is optional. Submissions are emailed to the team, and the dialog lists exactly what is sent so nothing is collected out of sight:
- Your message, exactly as written
- Your email, only if you add it — when you are signed in your account email is used automatically. It is set as the Reply-To on the email so the team can reply to you, and is used for nothing else. Leave it out and the feedback arrives anonymously.
- App version and operating system
- Your plan (free, Plus, Pro or Believer) when you are signed in. The plan is read from your account on the server rather than sent by the app; signed-out feedback carries no plan.
Note content, titles, tags and file paths are never included.
Templates
Built-in Templates
memrynote-provided templates. Read-only; duplicate to make an editable copy.
My Templates
Custom templates you've made. Edit, duplicate, or delete from each row's ⋯ menu.
Clicking a row — built-in or custom — opens it in the template editor tab and closes Settings. The New Template button in the header opens an empty one.
Editor
Layout
Width sets the default writing column for every note and journal page — Normal (a comfortable reading column) or Full width (edge to edge). Individual notes can override this from the note's ⋮ menu (Full width), and the Journal has its own Full width toggle in its ⋮ menu — both override the global default.
Toolbar
Sticky / Floating controls whether the formatting toolbar stays pinned to the top or floats above selections.
Spelling
Check Spelling underlines misspelled words in notes and journals. It is off by default; turn it on to see squiggles as you write. Correcting a flagged word happens from the editor's context menu — see Spell Check.
Journal
Location & Format
Journal Folder is where daily notes are stored. Date Format sets their filename; Preview shows today's resulting path, and the info icon next to the field lists the tokens with today's date rendered through each. Supported tokens:

Everything else is kept as-is, so YYYY-MM-DD dddd gives 2026-09-26 Saturday.md. Weekday names are always English, whatever the app language, so filenames keep matching after a language change. A file only counts as a journal entry if its name matches the format; one whose weekday doesn't match its date (2026-09-26 Friday.md) stays a regular note. Changing the format renames the existing entries in the journal folder to match, so 2026-09-25.md becomes 2026-09-25 Friday.md and stays in your Journal. Only the filename changes: contents and sync are untouched, and other devices keep their own format. A file is never overwritten: if its new name is already taken it keeps its old name and shows up as a regular note. A format that leaves out the year, month or day renames nothing. Wiki links that point at an entry by its old filename are not rewritten.
Default Template
Pick the template seeded into new journal entries.
Sidebar Visibility
Show or hide journal sidebar panes:
- Show Schedule — calendar / events for the date
- Show Tasks — tasks due that day
Footer
Show Stats Footer displays writing statistics (word, character, and entry counts).
Tasks
Defaults
- Default Project — which project new tasks are assigned to
- Default Sort Order — manual, due date, priority, or created date
- Default View — which scope the Tasks page opens on (All, Today, Tomorrow, or Next 7 days). Defaults to All.
Inbox
Stale Inbox Days — number of days a task can sit in the inbox before being flagged stale (1–90).
Images — how an image lands in a note you file it to. Embed in the note keeps it inside the note and out of the sidebar; File in the sidebar moves the file into the folder you pick and links to it. Ask every time turns the prompt in the filing panel back on after you have answered it once. See Triage.
Calendar
Google Calendar
Link a Google account to show external events alongside vault events on the Calendar. Status and source pickers appear here.
Add account links a second (or third) Google account. Each account is listed with its own calendars and its own Disconnect. Tick the calendars you want in memrynote — unticking one removes its events.
Show memrynote events in Google Calendar controls sync direction. Leave it on for two-way sync, or turn it off for one-way (inbound only) — Google events still appear in memrynote, but memrynote events are not pushed to Google.
Subscribed Calendars
Paste a calendar's shared link (ICS or webcal://) and press Subscribe to add it to the Calendar as a read-only calendar. A plain http:// link gets a warning that it travels unencrypted. Where do I find the link? lists the steps for Proton, iCloud, Outlook, Fastmail, Notion Calendar, and public schedules. Each subscription shows its host, when it last updated, and why the last update failed, with Rename, Refresh, and Remove buttons; the dot in front of its name sets its color.
Once you have a subscription, Let AI read these events decides whether the AI assistant can read your subscribed calendars. It is separate from the Google switch: allowing Google does not allow subscribed calendars. See AI access per calendar service.
This Mac (macOS)
On a Mac, This Mac shows the calendars the built-in Calendar app already has, read-only and without signing in. Allow calendar access is the only thing that shows the macOS permission question. Calendars are grouped by the account Calendar files them under; tick the ones you want. If access was denied or later turned off, the section says why, with Open System Settings and Check again. These calendars stay on this Mac and never sync. See macOS Calendar. Windows and Linux don't list this section.
Other Calendar Services
Settings → Calendar has one section per calendar service memrynote supports on your operating system. A service that does not exist on your system is not listed at all. Each section shows only what that service can do:
- A service memrynote can only read shows a Read-only badge and has no switch for writing memrynote events to it.
- A service without instant change notifications says how often memrynote checks it for changes.
- A service that allows several accounts lists them, each with its own Disconnect, and has Add account.
- Let AI read these events is asked per service, as described above.
Week Start
Week Start — Sunday or Monday. Sets the first day of the week everywhere in memrynote: the Calendar month, year, and mini views, the sidebar mini-calendar, task date pickers, task week filters, and relative date labels.
Day Cell Click Behavior
- Default Day Cell Click — clicking a date opens the journal entry or the calendar view
- Calendar Page Override — same behavior, overridable for the calendar page specifically
What syncs between your devices
These calendar settings follow you to your other devices, including the iPhone app: Week Start, Show notes on calendar, the default calendar for new events, each service's Show memrynote events in … switch, Let AI read these events, and whether Google's first-run calendar picker was answered. A change on one device shows on the others after their next sync.
These stay on the device where you set them: Day Cell Click Behavior, This Mac / This iPhone calendars, which date properties show on the calendar, and every sign-in. Google, CalDAV, and subscribed-calendar credentials never leave the device, so a second device signs in to the same account itself.
Features
Simple on/off toggles for optional or in-progress surfaces, per device.
- Canvas — enables the spatial canvas surface and its sidebar section. On by default. See Canvas Overview.
Appearance
Color Mode
System (follow OS), Light, or Dark, shown as small window previews painted in the current theme and colors.
Theme
Memrynote is the built-in theme, white in light mode. Warm, at the bottom of the list, is the paper-toned light palette that used to be the Warm color mode; both share the same dark mode. Memrynote themes lists fifteen well-known editor themes: Ayu, Catppuccin, Dracula, Everforest, GitHub, Gruvbox, Kanagawa, Material, Monokai, Night Owl, Nord, One, Rosé Pine, Solarized, and Tokyo Night. Each has a light and a dark variant, and the color mode picks between them.
Updating from a version without themes keeps the look you had: a vault on the Warm or System mode opens on the Warm theme, and one on White or Dark opens on Memrynote.
Picking a theme takes its whole look: background and text overrides are cleared and the accent goes back to the theme's. The two buttons next to the picker copy the current look to the clipboard as JSON and import one from it, so a look can be shared as text.
Accent, Background, Foreground
- Accent: a theme's own accent (Theme), one of eight presets (indigo, amber, emerald, red, violet, cyan, pink, orange), or any
#RRGGBBtyped into the field (Custom). Orange is the default for the Memrynote palette. - Background and Foreground override the theme's canvas and text color. They apply to the mode on screen and are stored per mode: light (Warm and White share it) and dark. A dark background picked at night therefore never ends up under a light theme's text when the OS switches to light. The reset arrow goes back to the theme's color.
All of these sync to your other devices. A device on an older version keeps the Memrynote palette.
Font
The interface font family, described under Typography below.
Advanced
Collapsed by default; Reset to default puts every option in it back.
- Font size and Zoom, described below.
- Reduce motion: System follows the OS setting; On turns animations off regardless of it.
- Use pointer cursors: show a hand cursor over every button and menu item, not only links.
- Font smoothing: grayscale anti-aliasing, which makes text thinner on macOS.
Reduce motion, pointer cursors, and font smoothing are per-device, like zoom, and do not sync.
Typography
Font Size — A
−/+stepper from 12px to 24px in 1px steps, default 16px, with the current size shown between the two buttons. Sets the base interface size; the whole app and note editor text scale with it, live on every step. The reset button next to the stepper puts it back to 16px. It is a stepper rather than a slider for the same reason Zoom is, below: resizing the text reflows the settings page under the pointer. Older versions of the app offered Small / Medium / Large only; those land on 14px, 16px and 20px respectively, and a device still on an older version follows your choice to the nearest of the three.Font Family — One searchable picker with two sections. Built-in holds the fonts memrynote ships with: System, Sans-Serif, Serif, Monospace, Gelasio, Geist and Inter. Installed on this computer lists every font family found on your machine, on macOS, Windows and Linux alike. Every row is drawn in the font it names, so you can see a typeface before you pick it, and the closed row previews your current choice the same way.
The list is capped to a readable height and scrolls, so a machine with hundreds of families stays navigable. Type in the search box to narrow it. Picking a font applies it to the interface immediately.
Like the rest of Appearance, this setting syncs to your other devices. A font that only one device has installed still falls back gracefully on the others: that device keeps rendering its own family instead, and the picker marks the row as not installed. If memrynote cannot read your installed fonts at all, the built-in presets stay available and the picker says so.
Custom Font used to be a separate text field where you typed a font name. It is gone; the name you had saved is preserved and appears as your selection in the picker.
Zoom
Zoom Level — A − / + stepper running from 50% to 200% in 10% steps, default 100%, with the current level shown between the two buttons. It scales the entire interface, not just text: icons, spacing, images and note content all grow and shrink together. The reset button next to the stepper puts it back to 100%.
It is a stepper rather than a slider on purpose. Zooming rescales the settings page itself, so a slider track would shift out from under the pointer mid-drag and the value would be almost impossible to land on.
Cmd/Ctrl + and Cmd/Ctrl - step the zoom, and Cmd/Ctrl 0 returns to 100%, including while you are typing in a note. The View menu carries the same three commands. All of them update the reading in Settings, because they change the same saved value.
Zoom is the one Appearance setting that does not sync to your other devices, and that is deliberate: it compensates for the physical screen you are looking at, so a 27-inch desktop and a 13-inch laptop each keep their own level. It persists across restarts on the device where you set it.
Keyboard Shortcuts
Global Capture
Set a system-wide hotkey that opens quick capture from any app. No extra system permission is needed, including Accessibility on macOS.
Until you set one, the built-in hotkey Cmd/Ctrl + Shift + Space opens quick capture. memrynote releases it once your own hotkey registers.
If another app already holds the combination you press, the Global Capture row says so, nothing is saved, and your previous hotkey keeps working. The row also tells you when another app holds the built-in hotkey at launch, or when a saved hotkey cannot be used as a global shortcut. macOS does not report conflicts with other apps, so on a Mac a conflicting hotkey can register and still fire in the other app.
Shortcut List
Searchable, grouped by category (Navigation, Tabs, Editor, View). Click any row to capture a new binding; it takes effect immediately, without a restart. Custom bindings show a badge.
Editor rows (Bold, Italic, Underline) are read-only — those keys are handled by the note editor itself.
Reset All
Appears only if you've customized shortcuts. Restores defaults.

AI
Enable
A master toggle for AI features. Off by default — memrynote never reaches out to AI services until you turn this on. When off, memrynote also hides AI entry points in the app: inline editor AI, Agent Chat in the right sidebar, AI tag/folder/note suggestions, voice recording/transcription controls, and quick-capture voice capture.
Voice Transcription
- Provider — local Whisper Small (private) or OpenAI Whisper API
- Local Model — status, download button
- OpenAI API Key — password field, only shown for the OpenAI provider
Embedding Model

Agent Permissions
Agent Chat backend and permission settings are now collapsed inside the AI Assistant page. These are machine-local and are not synced between devices.
- Default Access — starts each new Agent turn in Vault only or Computer access
- Confirm Actions — Ask before changes is the default: every vault write pauses and shows what it would change before it lands. Always allow accepts writes without a preview
- Always allowed — tools you granted a standing approval for in this vault, each with a Revoke. Grants are made from an approval card and never cover deletes. Note and journal edits always ask, so an older grant for them is listed as ignored
- Preset — Ollama, LM Studio, llama.cpp, or Custom
- Base URL — OpenAI-compatible endpoint, such as
http://localhost:11434/v1 - Model — choose from
/v1/modelswhen available or type a model manually - API Key — optional, stored in the OS keychain
- Test Connection — checks the endpoint and selected model
- Probe Tools — verifies tool-call emission and tool-result continuation before vault tools are enabled, and forces a fresh check when the cached verdict is stale
The Agent Chat prompt bar can override access for one turn and can enable web search when the active backend supports it. Vault-only turns keep the CLI backend constrained to memrynote tools; computer access turns grant broader local CLI access for that turn.
Loopback endpoints are treated as local. Custom non-loopback endpoints require an explicit not-fully-local acknowledgement because prompts and tool results are sent to that server.
Agent MCP
Local MCP server controls are also collapsed inside AI Assistant for external desktop AI clients.
- Server URL — localhost endpoint copied into an MCP client
- Bearer Token — per-launch in-memory token copied as an authorization header
- Rotate Token — immediately invalidates the previous token
- Registered Tools — count of exposed vault tools
Agent Chat backends use this same server for vault tools. Read tools do not prompt. Create, update and delete tools require active Agent Chat context and, by default, pause for inline approval with a preview of the change. Setting Confirm Actions to Always allow accepts them automatically and shows them as collapsed tool rows instead. Plain external clients can use read tools, but context-free writes are denied. See Agent MCP Server.
Vault
Storage Usage
Total usage vs. quota with a stacked bar by category (notes, attachments, CRDT, other). Refresh recomputes.
Vaults in your account
Every vault synced to your account, with its local path or an "not on this device" hint, and a Delete button that removes the synced copy from Memry's servers without touching the files on disk. The vault you currently have open is marked and cannot be deleted.
If the vault open on this device is not one of them, the section says so at the top. That vault is refused by sync — on a paid plan every attempt fails with the vault limit, because the extra vault has no slot. This usually happens when a second computer signs in and opens a new folder instead of the account's vault. The warning offers the way back: Open account vault when that vault already exists on this device, or Download account vault when it lives only in the cloud. Raising your plan's vault limit is the alternative if you genuinely want both vaults synced.
Location
The vault path on disk. Reveal opens it in Finder / Explorer.
Activity
A record of what happened to files that entered or left the vault without going through the editor: files you put in or removed from the vault folder, what each import brought in, and anything Memry skipped or could not handle. See Vault Activity for what is recorded.
- Keep for — 7, 30 (default), or 90 days. Older entries are dropped.
- All / Skipped and failed — switch between every entry and only the ones that need a look.
- Show log file — reveals
.memry/activity.jsonl, the same entries as plain JSON lines. - Clear — removes every entry after a confirmation. Your files are not touched.
The log is kept on this device only and is never synced.
Tags
A tag manager listing every tag with its usage count. Rename, recolor, or delete tags globally — changes propagate across all notes.
Properties
A property manager for custom note fields. Supported types:

- Select (single-pick, with colored options)
